 70th ANNIVERSARY VE DAY 8th MAY 2015

Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association

29/45 Foot

Worcester Branch

To commemorate Victory in Europe Day members of the Worcester Branch of The Worcestershire and

Sherwood Foresters Regimental Association will hold a wreath laying ceremony at the new Regimental

Memorial Stone in Gheluvelt Park, Barbourne Road, Worcester on FRIDAY 8th MAY at 11.00 hrs.

This is to remember the soldiers of the Worcestershire Regiment who served at Home and in Europe, the

Middle East in Palestine and Eritrea, then in North Africa with the 8th Army and the siege at Tobruk

during World War 2 1939 – 1945.

Lt. P W Kerans, 1st Bn Worcestershire Regiment, was killed in action at the battle of Keren in Eritrea, which

was part of the Italian Empire, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1941. His brother won

the Distinguished Service Cross while in command of HMS Amethyst when it ran the gauntlet of Chinese

guns during a heroic dash down the Yangste River in 1949. The above paragraph courtesy of the Friends of

the Worcestershire Regiment Museum.

A young Worcester sailor on the Amethyst, Signalman Donald Porter was ,with other members of the crew,

interred by the Chinese. On leaving the Navy Donald enlisted in the 7th Bn The Worcestershire Regiment

(TA) and served as a Corporal in the Signal Platoon until the Battalion was disbanded in1967. Sadly Donald

is no longer with us.

Visit the Worcestershire Soldier Gallery of the Regimental Museum in the City of Worcester Museum,

Foregate Street, Worcester.
