A year later the battalion returned to UK before sailing for Malaya in June 1950. The Band returned to Norton Barracks in 1952 and following the battalion’s return in 1953, joined them in Bulford where Ian was promoted to sergeant. In February 1957 they sailed for the West Indies where the band was based in Jamaica apart from rehearsing for and playing at the Bermuda Tattoo. In September his 12 year engagement was due to expire and, as he could see no prospect of further promotion, he returned to UK for discharge. He then emigrated to Canada, joined the Canadian Army and served as principal percussionist in the Canadian Guards then the Royal Canadian Regiment, and, while still serving and well into retirement became heavily involved in supporting and promoting the teaching of percussion in Canada.

498210 Major Jeremy Paul Witcher Jerry Witcher came from Hampshire and went to Peter Symonds School, Winchester, prior to enlisting in November 1973 and going to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in November 1974. He joined the 1st Battalion in Ballykelly in 1975 serving also in Colchester before returning to Northern Ireland for the South Armagh tour in 1977. A good shot, in Colchester he trained with the Bisley team where he was known for his ready wit and warm personality. He spent two years as a recruit platoon commander at Depot, the Prince of Wales Division, Lichfield. He flirted with the idea of transferring to the RMP before returning to 1WFR in Hemer, West Germany, as a Company Second in Command. A tour that included being a Company Operations Officer in West Belfast in 1982. In 1983 he took command of 33 Cadet Training Team followed by two years as SO3 G3 (Trg) in HQ British Forces Hong Kong from 1985. He was selected and attended the Army Staff College (Camberley) in 1987 and was subsequently posted to be SO2 G3 (Ops/Plans) HQ South East District, Aldershot, between 1988-1990. He was a company commander at Depot Lichfield at its closure and led the relocation of recruit training to the Junior Leaders Regiment Royal Artillery at Bramcote before retiring from the Army in November 1993. An enthusiastic adventurer he led kayaking and canoeing expeditions in Brunei and Canada so joining World Challenge, the schools expedition company, on leaving the Army was a natural move. He and his wife Amanda retired to Varazdin, Croatia, in 2008 where they started up Schools Own Adventure which hosted UK schools on courses in adventure (mostly DofE Gold), geography, business studies and general cultural appreciation. Schools Own closed in 2021 due to Covid. His tragic early death was as a result of a fall when climbing in Croatia. Jerry’s daughters are arranging a memorial service in Winchester on November 19th details of which will be promulgated when known.
