We regret to report the death of Sgt Ian Turnbull in Canada on 26 May 2023 aged 92. He was born in Worcester and enlisted as a bandboy at Norton Barracks in February 1946 aged 15 and a half. In October 1947 the Regimental Band, with the bandboys, joined 1 WORC R in Luneburg where, still a bandboy, he joined the Band  to replace the only percussionist who had left. He moved to Berlin, by now a bandsman, with the battalion in 1948 before the Airlift began and on to Gottingen as it ended in May 1949. A year later the battalion returned to UK before sailing for Malaya in June 1950. The Band returned to Norton Barracks in 1952 and following the battalion’s return in 1953, joined them in Bulford where Ian was promoted to sergeant. In February 1957 they sailed for the West Indies where the band was based in Jamaica apart from rehearsing for and playing at the Bermuda Tattoo. In September his 12 year engagement was due to expire and, as he could see no prospect of further promotion, he returned to UK for discharge. He then emigrated to Canada, joined the Canadian Army and served as principal percussionist in the Canadian Guards then the Royal Canadian Regiment, and, while still serving and well into retirement became heavily involved in supporting and promoting the teaching of percussion in Canada.
